SoundBite Marriage

Sound Bite Marriage

These short ideas trigger 4 to 6 hours of guided discussion to help couples understand how differently men and women think. Knowing this before they marry makes misunderstandings less of a surprise later.

It's a good idea to ask each party to write down their main lessons from each session and compare notes to see how their takeaways differ.

No matter how kind and understanding couples try to be, there will be disagreement from time to time. Conflict at work costs so much that "Anger Management" has been studied a lot. This is a well-researched way to keep disagreement from growing into conflict in marriage or at work.

Wedding Wisdom

Wedding Wisdom: The Simplicity of Marriage

Teaching parents and older believers how to prepare young people for marriage — simple in design, a lot of work in practice. We wrote Sound Bite Marriage when pastors pointed out that Wedding Wisdon is far too long for the few hours which couples choose to make available for premarital counseling.

Finding Joy in Marriage

Finding Joy in Marriage: Holy Matrimony and Secular Science

Scientific and Biblical insights into how sex binds couples together — and why following God’s design brings joy. The first chapter explains ways to repair a damaged relationship. The rest of the book tells how to build a marriage of delight.

God made marriage so simple that He could explain it in one verse. As with salvation, few there be that find it (Mt. 7:14).

Having given men and women different roles as they follow His command to be fruitful and multiply, God created their brains so that they think very differently. Chapter 14 touches on what God did to help families make better decisions by giving husbands and wives different points of view.

Marriages can’t last without deep emotional connections, but men and women are shocked to find out that they connect differently. A husband must connect to his wife by opening his heart whenever she needs emotional support. A wife must connect to her husband by opening her body whenever he is able to have her. This chapter explains how these connections bind husband and wife together 'til death do them part.

Chaper 9 summarizes brain research which shows how badly women are damaged by sex outside marriage and proves that traditional marriage customs work out best for couples and their children.

Chapter 13 treats the Book of Ruth as a romance story: a poverty-stricken widow goes to a strange land to find God, works hard, marries a rich guy, and becomes the great-grandmother of a king. Any man who thinks he might want to marry a good woman should think about how Boaz honored Ruth so that she wanted to marry him. You'll read how Noami gave Ruth the very best advice on getting married you'll ever hear. An older woman's advice on staying married is in the Song of Solomon.

For Our Learning

What God Gave For Our Learning

Lessons from Biblical examples that were given "for our learning(Ro. 15:4)." It discusses what leaders and their people did to show what worked, what didn’t, and why it matters for marriage.

The desire of rulers to own all the land and to get total control of all their subjects goes back at least to 1700 BC. This section shows how Joseph helped Pharaoh end up owning all the land, animals, and citizens of Egypt during the 7 years of famine that followed the 7 good years and gives other examples of unlawful power-grabs.

Hear the Voice of the Bridegroom

Hear the Voice of the Bridegroom Concerning Holy Matrimony

A call to pastors and believers to rejoice in Christ and prepare for the marriage supper of the Lamb. Chapter 12 tells how to prepare future church leaders.

God gave us a simple way to make peace whenever someone becomes offended. When people in a family, church, or business office don’t do what God commands to heal offenses, resentment builds up. People forget why they’re upset; they just remember that they’re angry without knowing why. This extends God’s plan of reconciliation between two people to help heal group hurts when nobody can explain why they're angry.

What God Said About Marriage

What God Said About Marriage

A comprehensive 350 page guide too big for a web page — filled with stories, Scripture, and hard-won wisdom. A grandmother who read the chapter on being a husband asked, "Do I need to read what you say about wives?" She had married daughters, they all knew what men want. "Let me put it this way, " she said. "If my husband treated me as you suggest, I would not only be willing to give him what he wants, I would be proud to meet his needs."

Want to Share This Teaching?

We’re happy to speak, share, or help you use these materials in your church or study group. All resources are offered freely — we only ask that you pass God's blessing on. We've emailed them all over the world and two books have been translated into Urdu. We hope that pastors and teachers will let the Holy Spirit help adapt these ideas to the needs of the people whom God has given them.

Our books live on a hard drive. Please comment! When we upload changes, the next customer gets the benefit of your improvements.

God commanded us to form families and bring up children to serve Him (Gen. 1:28; Mal. 2:15). God loves children (Ps. 127:3) so Satan hates children. It's easy to see that Western societies have turned against families and against children. Our blog Marriage Under Threat has these books and other material relating to marriages and families.

You can download the .doc files for these and other books from this shared folder.

Secular Support for God's Marriage Principles

20 or 30 Bible verses form the core of God's rules for Holy Matrimony. God explained the reason for only one of His commands; He expects us to obey Him through faith. If He had explained His reasons, the Bible would have been far too big for hand-copying. These books explain the logic behind God's plan for marriage.

Hooked: How Sex Changes Your Brain

Hooked: The Brain Science on How Casual Sex Affects Human Development

Research has a replicability crisis: many experiments don't give the same answer when they're repeated. Hooked agrees with the Word of God. This article shows how key points from Hooked line up with the Bible.

Our brains can be flooded with dopamine when a man and woman interact. Any interaction can trigger neurochemicals which change a couple’s brains to bind them to each other. Hooked explains on page 60 that “Drugs such as cocaine and amphetamine target dopamine neurons. . . . love, on a biochemical level, is a lot like addiction. The healthy addiction of a lifelong monogamous sexual relationship even has measurable physical benefits.”

Dopamine is the “pleasure hormone;” people badly want anything that generates dopamine. Men and women can easily become addicted to each other. Recovering from any addiction can be very hard. Being addicted to a spouse who treats you kindly helps you live longer, but an unkind spouse can cause a lot of harm. You must make sure the other person treats everyone kindly before letting yourself become emotionally involved.

“One significant but sad outcome of becoming involved in an intense romantic relationship that breaks up, especially if it has become sexual, is emotional upheaval. Men can experience these feelings, but women suffer more . . .” [emphasis added] page 58

When the pill became available, feminists proclaimed that without fear of pregnancy, women were free to enjoy recreational sex without commitment. Men are glad to hear that, but it's simply not true:

“Much like dopamine, it [oxytocin] is an involuntary process that cannot distinguish between a one-night stand and a lifelong soul mate. Oxytocin can cause a woman to begin to bond to a man even during what was expected to be a short-term sexual relationship. She may know he is not the man she would want to marry but intimate sexual involvement may cause her to be so attached to him she can’t make herself separate. This can lead to a woman being taken off-guard by a desire to stay with a man she would otherwise find undesirable and staying with him even if he is possessive or abusive. [or unfaithful, emphasis added] page 36

If a woman's on the pill, a man's convinced she's planning to have sex, so why not with him, right here and right now? The pill makes it hard to say "No."

“If a young woman becomes physically close to and hugs a man, it will trigger the bonding process, creating a greater desire to be near him. . . . if he wants to escalate the physical nature of the relationship, it will become harder and harder for her to say no.” [emphasis added] page 36

Unprotected: A Campus Psychiatrist Reveals How Political Correctness in Her Profession Endangers Every Student

Dr. Grossman agrees with Hooked that casual sex can damage women badly. Having treated more than 2,000 university students for depression and other emotional problems, she wrote that a woman can be very depressed when she finds that her boyfriend had no interest in her beyond sex. Most women associate sex with commitment; most men don’t.

She also explains how common sexually-transmitted diseases can make it impossible for a women to have children.

The Gift Of Fear

The Gift of Fear: Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence

The author describes women who were robbed or raped. They said they felt uneasy, but told themselves not to be silly and kept walking. His book says to pay attention when you feel that something’s wrong and discusses ways to tell which fears are real and which are not. A woman can see into a man’s heart if she looks (Judges 16:18a ). Many women ignore the gift God gave for their protection and won’t look because they’re afraid they might see something negative and have to call the relationship off . . .

"Marry in haste; repent at leisure."
